The importance of honoring parents in Islam

06/12/2025

Kindness to parents is one of the greatest deeds a Muslim can perform. Many verses and hadiths in the Noble Quran and the prophetic sunnah emphasize the importance of being good to one's parents. Allah, the Exalted, says in the Quran: "And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], 'uff,' and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word" (Al-Isra: 23). This verse emphasizes the necessity of being good to them at all stages of their lives.

Acts of kindness to parents include responding to them when they call, obeying them in what pleases Allah, recognizing their favor, and praying for them for good. The Prophet, peace be upon him, confirmed that being good to parents is one of the reasons for entering Paradise.
