The Islamic perspective on global poverty
25/12/2025

Poverty is a global issue affecting millions of people around the world. In Islam, poverty is considered not only an economic problem but also a social and moral challenge. Islam directs Muslims to stand in solidarity with the poor and needy through Zakat, charity, and benevolence.
Allah Almighty in the Holy Quran says: “The ones who spend their wealth in the way of Allah are doing it for themselves, and you do not spend except seeking the face of Allah” (Al-Baqarah: 272), and this clarifies that spending in the cause of Allah is not only to help others but also for the Muslim to gain reward and merit from Allah.
Islam calls for social justice by providing rights to the poor and the needy, as well as for the redistribution of wealth through Zakat and other means. Therefore, global poverty is considered one of the issues that Muslims should engage with and work on finding solutions to reduce its impacts.
