The role of fasting in strengthening faith

30/12/2025

Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, and it plays a significant role in strengthening faith. By refraining from food and drink during the daylight hours in the month of Ramadan, Muslims feel closer to God and increase their attachment to Him. Fasting teaches Muslims patience and allows them to reflect on the blessings that God has bestowed upon them.

The belief in fasting relates to practicing fasting not only in physical aspects but also in spiritual ones. Allah, the Almighty, says in the Qur'an: “O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting” (Al-Baqarah: 183), indicating that fasting is a means to strengthen the relationship between the servant and his Lord.

Additionally, fasting is considered an opportunity to rid oneself of sins and transgressions. By abstaining from invalidating actions, a Muslim becomes more pious and aware of his actions, finding in fasting a means for worship and spiritual elevation.
