The importance of repentance in Islam

28/12/2025

Repentance is the return to Allah, the Almighty, after committing sins and wrongdoings, and it is one of the greatest deeds that Allah loves. Allah, the Exalted, says in the Quran: “And turn to Allah all of you, O believers, that you might succeed” (An-Nur: 31), which indicates that repentance is obligatory for every Muslim if he falls into error.

Repentance is not merely saying “I seek forgiveness from Allah”, but it is regret for the sin, abstaining from wrongdoing, and determination not to return to it. If these conditions are fulfilled, then Allah forgives the servant and accepts his repentance. Allah, the Almighty, says: “Indeed, Allah forgives all sins” (Az-Zumar: 53), which reflects Allah's vast mercy.

Repentance is considered a means of purifying the heart and regaining tranquility. Additionally, repentance brings inner peace to a person and helps him to have true repentance in the future.
